These days, ski resorts are so much more than just about the skiing and Tignes provides activities for non-skiers, the injured as well as for those bad weather days. As well as all that, there are heart-stopping activities for the crazier among you who like your adrenalin in large doses.

For the more active (or brave) you may like to try ice diving, dog sledding, paragliding , ice climbing, hang-gliding, horse riding, climbing or a helicopter trip. (see below for more information)

For some rest and relaxation, check into a spa for the day. The cheapest is in Tignespace and you can use their jacuzzis, sauna and steam room from €11/day. For a more upmarket luxurious experience, check into one of the hotel spas: Montana Hotel or Campanules (Le Lac) or Ecrin du Val Claret (Val Claret).

Unfortunately for us all, bad weather days in a ski resort can feel a little like a caravanning holiday in Wales . Luckily, Tignes Development has thoughtfully scheduled activities for such times. Pick up a ‘Tignes Animations’ guide for the week’s events. Also, check out the Multimedia Centre on the top floor of the Maison de Tignes in Le Lac – internet, video games and digital camera downloading facilities are on offer. Alternatively Jacks Bowling Alley (Le Lac) or the Cinema in Val Claret also provide a good bolt-hole.

For a real day off, there are over 60 restaurants and 50 bars available for your perusal. There are also two mountain restaurants accessible to pedestrians:  The Tovière Restaurant at the top of the Aeroski from Tignes Le Lac (approx. £6.20) or The Panoramic at the top of the Funicular from Val Claret (£9 or £15 including lunch), from here you can jump on the cable car to the top of the Grande Motte and take in some of the incredible views. This is also a good place to watch others ski – especially if it’s sunny!

If you don’t ski but want to see some sights, join a Canadian snow shoe hiking run by Evolution 2, you’ll go walking in the alpine forests where you can admire the breathtaking scenery. Also you may be lucky enough to see some Chamoix hopping from rock to rock, or in the spring, Marmottes poking their heads out from the snow. You may also see in the air the resident pair of Golden Eagles or one of only 10 pairs in France of the enormous Gypaète Barbus.

Tignes has an amazing history surrounding the huge Tignes Barrage or dam that you drive over to reach Tignes. The Heritage Centre in the Maison de Tignes in Le Lac displays photographs of the old village and provides guided tours of the centre for free.
